May 4 blog challenge - Favorite quote and why you love it

It was difficult for me last summer when my youngest child Caitlin left to go spend a semester in Australia.  While she was there she very kindly kept in close touch with me through face book as well as a blog, so I was able to enjoy her experiences vicariously. Some of the great blessings of her trip were the beautiful friendships she formed with other students staying in the International Lodge.  Her roommate Maya is a singer and songwriter and since Caitlin liked her music, I of course had to find it all on youtube and listen to it as well.  There is one song in particular that touched me, and a line from it that goes through my mind probably on a daily basis, and that is what I am calling my favorite quote at this time.  Although Maya wrote the song, I do not know if the quote is hers, and I do know that there are other versions of it that have been around for a long time.  At any rate, the line of the song that I love is "And mountains or desserts can all be crossed one step at a time".  Of course Maya was talking about a particular situation, but this quote can apply to any difficulty. To me this is the ultimate illustration of optimism.  Nothing can be so big or overwhelming that you can't take small steps toward fixing or improving it.  A task may look impossible in the big picture but if you break it down it can be accomplished.  Because I tend to focus on the difficulty of an issue, this is a good reminder to me of how to approach things that appear to be very daunting.  When these words run through my mind I feel an upsurge in the energy needed to take that first step.  It calms my worries, and instills conviction and confidence.  I also think that because I hear it in a song line it sticks with me and the very energy and encouragement of the song fills me as well, and I feel inspired and uplifted.
I hope to meet Maya one day, and hear her sing in person as the sound quality of youtube on my computer is not doing her justice, but if you want to know more you can go to youtube and put in Maya Knowles Eyes Like Ours and listen for yourself.
Thanks Maya!  And thanks to Caitlin for sharing with me.

  1. I know when I am hiking on a ridge, and can see a destination that is over 10 miles away, it often feels impossible that I could ever reach it just by hiking. But when I take my mind off that and just hike one step at a time, before I know it I'm there!
